Nina Hannold's Gravesite is a roadside exhibit and a short walk to a fenced grave, four miles north of Panther Junction. Stop if you're curious about the families who tried to ranch this remote part of Big Bend; it's a compact history detour rather than a developed attraction.

From the roadside parking area, a cement walkway gives way to a sandy, cactus-lined path that climbs to a small rise. Nina's stone grave sits inside an iron fence above what was once a creek. The exhibit explains why she chose this place for her final resting place.

The Hannold ranchNina and Curtis Hannold started a ranch near here in 1908.

Nina and Curtis Hannold started a ranch near here in 1908. Like other early Big Bend homesteaders, they had to be self-sufficient and enterprising. Curtis also taught school at Dugout Wells, about seven miles south, to help support the family. The grave gives that demanding life on the early ranch a human scale.
