Sotol Vista is a roadside overlook on Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, 7.9 miles from its beginning. A paved loop brings you to a broad panorama of Big Bend’s western side, with Santa Elena Canyon showing as a tiny gap in a distant mesa. It is an easy place to pause between longer stops on the drive; the view is at the pullout, not at the end of a hike.

Sunrise and sunset bring the landscape into stronger relief, and the open panorama is especially rewarding in evening light. Stay a little after sunset if you have time: the overlook is far from artificial lights, so the dark sky is part of the visit. For a photo, keep the broad ridges in frame and look for the small notch where Santa Elena Canyon breaks the distant mesa.

The paved loop has ten pull-in spaces, three spaces for RVs or trailers, and two accessible spaces. A vault toilet is available. The stop is listed as wheelchair accessible, although details about the path between parking and the viewpoint are not specified. No food service, potable water, or EV charging is listed here, so carry what you need for the scenic drive.

Sotol is also the name of a desert plant, Dasylirion leiophyllum, with long, narrow leaves edged by curved teeth. It grows in a distinct band around Big Bend’s higher mountains, where rainfall is a little greater. Indigenous people baked the plant’s heart for food; its heart is also fermented and distilled into sotol liquor. The available park account explains the plant, but does not establish a separate naming story for this overlook.
