Overview
Make this your first stop. Panther Junction is the park’s central nerve center—where you sort permits, pay entrance fees, get current conditions, and quickly understand the lay of the land through exhibits and a short orientation film.
What You’ll Find
Inside, you’ll get exhibits that frame the park’s geology and natural and cultural history, a bookstore run by the Big Bend Natural History Association, restrooms, and even a U.S. Post Office if you want to mail a postcard from the desert. Rangers here issue backcountry and river use permits and can steer you toward the right hikes and drives for the day.
Logistics That Matter
Fuel, snacks, coffee, ice cream, basic groceries, gifts, potable water, flush restrooms, recycling, and an ATM are available at the nearby Panther Junction Service Station—one of only two fuel stops inside the park. Top off your tank and water here so you’re not range‑anxious later.
A Quick Look at Nature
You’re not here for wildlife viewing, but you will find a tidy native-plant garden outside that gives a feel for the local desert flora before you head deeper into the park.
Best Time to Visit
Stop here early in your trip (and early in the day) to grab permits, ask rangers about current conditions, and avoid the busiest stretch. It’s an easy, central detour no matter where you’re headed next.
