This is the short, photogenic out-and-back to Balanced Rock in the Grapevine Hills—one of Big Bend’s most recognizable spots. Expect 1.9–2.2 miles total out-and-back, with roughly 250–300 feet of gain. Most of the route is an easy desert walk, capped by a brief, steeper push with light rock scrambling to reach the famous boulder “arch.” Plan on 1–2 hours, including time for photos.
The first mile is a gentle wander through open Chihuahuan Desert dotted with rounded boulders and desert brush. The final quarter mile climbs a rocky hillside where you’ll use hands for balance in a short scramble—fun, not technical. At the top, Balanced Rock frames sweeping views, and you can poke around on the surrounding rock features for different angles and vistas. It’s a popular spot; expect a courteous queue beneath the rock for the classic shot.
You’re walking through the Grapevine Hills, a landscape sculpted by ancient volcanic activity and long‑term erosion. The result: stacked, weathered boulders and improbable formations culminating in the namesake balanced stone. Keep an eye out for hardy desert plants and animals adapted to the Chihuahuan Desert—this area is known for unique species and fragile vegetation.
Open year‑round, but heat rules the day. In late spring through summer, start at sunrise or go late afternoon for cooler temps and softer light on the rocks. Winter and shoulder seasons offer the most comfortable mid‑day conditions. Weekends see more people; early starts help you beat both heat and crowds.
Park at the Grapevine Hills Trailhead off the unpaved Grapevine Hills Road; the approach is rocky and high-clearance is recommended.
Exposed sun and heat with no shade; carry ample water. Short but steep rock scramble at the end. Unpaved, rocky access road may be unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles. Stay on trail to protect fragile desert plants.
