Overview

Panther Path is a tiny, interpretive loop immediately west of the Panther Junction Visitor Center. It’s about 100 yards total, paved, and designed to be wheelchair- and stroller-friendly. If you’re new to the Chihuahuan Desert or visiting with kids, this is the fastest way to put names to the plants you’ll see all over the park.

What You’ll See

Expect a quiet, flat sidewalk winding through native desert vegetation with small signs identifying common and lesser-known plants. It’s an educational micro-walk, not a wilderness hike—no big views or dramatic geology—just a concise primer on Big Bend’s flora. Most visitors take 5–10 minutes, and many do it before or after checking out the exhibits inside the Visitor Center.

Tips & Who It’s For

Ask inside the Visitor Center about the Junior Ranger activity tied to Panther Path—kids can complete it here and earn an embroidered patch. This is a great first stop for families, first-timers, and anyone with limited time or mobility. If you’re looking for mileage or solitude, skip it and choose a longer trail elsewhere in the park.

Best Time to Walk

Open year-round. Plant appearance changes with seasons and rain; after wet periods you may see more leaves or blooms. It’s so short that timing is flexible—just weave it into your Visitor Center stop.
