The loop leads to the Dugout Wells oasis—a working windmill, mature cottonwoods, and huisache offering welcome shade. Keep an eye out for jackrabbits, javelinas, and soaring raptors, especially in the cool of early morning. Along the way, interpretive signs highlight desert ecology and the area’s human story, including remnants of an early 1900s settlement that once included a schoolhouse.

Open year-round. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable temperatures and the best chance at cactus blooms and active birdlife. Start early to beat heat and wind, and for your best wildlife viewing. Midday can be harsh and exposed until you reach the grove.
