Overview
A short, easy 0.5-mile loop (total) that samples open Chihuahuan Desert before finishing at the shady oasis of Dugout Wells. Expect a flat, well-defined path with minimal elevation change and interpretive signs that make this a relaxed, educational walk—more nature stroll than “hike.” It’s a perfect leg-stretcher between Panther Junction and Rio Grande Village and typically takes 20–30 minutes, plus whatever time you spend scanning for birds in the cottonwoods.

You’ll start in classic desert: creosote, prickly pear (look for seasonal blooms), and sandy soils under big skies with distant Chisos Mountain views. The loop leads to the Dugout Wells oasis—a working windmill, mature cottonwoods, and huisache offering welcome shade. A natural spring keeps this spot wet year-round, so it’s a magnet for birds and other wildlife. Keep an eye out for jackrabbits, javelinas, and soaring raptors, especially in the cool of early morning. Along the way, interpretive signs highlight desert ecology and the area’s human story, including remnants of an early 1900s settlement that once included a schoolhouse.

The trailhead sits across from the Dugout Wells picnic area. Parking is straightforward (cars and larger vehicles), with a vault toilet and shaded tables—rare amenities in this part of the park. The tread is natural dirt and gravel with some loose sections; it’s flat but not ADA-accessible. No permits are needed for day hiking.
Best Time to Hike
Open year-round. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable temperatures and the best chance at cactus blooms and active birdlife. Start early to beat heat and wind, and for your best wildlife viewing. Midday can be harsh and exposed until you reach the grove.
