Perrys Lookdown Campground

Overview

Perched right on the rim of the Grose Valley near Blackheath, Perrys Lookdown Campground is the classic Blue Mountains bush camp: big views, minimal fuss. You’re camping beside two stellar viewpoints—Perrys Lookdown and Dockers Lookout—with the valley spilling out in front of you and the famous Blue Gum Forest directly below.

Why camp here

This spot is all about location. Sunrise and sunset are superb from the lookouts a short stroll from your tent, and you’re sleeping at the trailhead for one of the area’s signature descents into the Grose Valley. It feels remote and wild, yet you can drive right to it.

Facilities and logistics

Expect a basic, self‑reliant setup: non‑flush drop toilets, picnic tables, and a parking area. There’s no drinking water, no showers, and no bins, so come prepared to bring everything you need and pack out everything you bring. Nights can be cold year‑round and the clifftop position means wind—good gear makes the difference.

Hiking from camp

From the campground, the Perrys Lookdown track drops steeply to Blue Gum Forest and Acacia Flat on the valley floor. It’s a tough, sustained climb back up, so plan conservatively and leave time (and energy) for the return. From the valley, longer through‑hikes link to Junction Rock and Evans Lookout, or north toward Pierces Pass and Victoria Falls if you’ve sorted transport.

What you’ll see

Up top: sweeping sandstone escarpments, the vast canopy of the Grose, and long ridgeline views. Down in the valley: the towering blue gums that gave Blue Gum Forest its name, with changing vegetation zones as you descend.

Wildlife

Around camp and along the track, expect classic bushland birdlife (think lyrebirds and black cockatoos), plus possums and wallabies at dawn and dusk. In warm months, bring repellent—mozzies can be lively at sunset.

Best time to visit

Weekdays and early mornings are the sweet spot for quieter campsites and soft light on the cliffs. For hikers, start the valley descent early to beat heat on the climb out. Sunset and sunrise make the lookouts shine; bring a headtorch for the walk back to your tent.

Know before you go

This is a first‑come bush campground and a hub for hikers, so weekends and holidays can fill fast. The descent to Blue Gum Forest is steep and strenuous—great for fit walkers, not ideal for casual strollers.
