Overview

The Undercliff Track at Wentworth Falls is the gentlest way to get those big Blue Mountains feels—think sweeping Jamison Valley vistas, cool sandstone overhangs, and ferny rainforest pockets—without grinding down into the valley. Most walkers do it as part of the classic Undercliff–Overcliff loop starting at Wentworth Falls Picnic Area. Expect about 2.5 miles/4 km total (3.5–4.7 km if you add side lookouts), 1.5–2 hours, and a Grade 3 (moderate) experience that’s easy for most.

Route and Flow

From the picnic area, follow signs toward National Pass, then take the signed turn for the Undercliff Tracks. The path tucks beneath the escarpment on a distinct ledge, then after roughly 20 minutes merges into the Overcliff Track. Continue to the Valley of the Waters and up to Conservation Hut, then use the Shortcut Track to close the loop back to the picnic area. Side spurs to Jamison Lookout, Princes Rock Lookout, and Den Fenella Lookout are worth the detours if you’ve got time.

Scenery You’ll Get

This one’s all about contrast: airy cliff-edge windows across the eucalyptus-draped Jamison Valley followed by immersive, shaded walking under honey-colored sandstone. After rain you’ll catch the sound of nearby cascades. In late spring and early summer, keep an eye out for bright wildflowers—especially red and yellow Christmas bells. Birders, listen for lyrebirds scratching along the return leg.

Trail Conditions and Feel

Surfaces are a mix of dirt, sandstone, and stone steps. It’s mostly flat to gently undulating, but there are stair sections and a few narrow ledges. Under the overhangs can be damp and slick after rain. The track is well signposted and easy to follow, with plenty of natural “rest stops” under overhangs and at lookouts.

Best Time to Hike

Year-round. Spring and summer bring wildflowers and lively birdlife; winter often delivers crystal-clear valley views but cooler, wetter undercliffs. Weekends get busy—go early for quieter track time and better light across the valley.

Tips

  • Footwear: wear grippy shoes; undercliff sections hold moisture and can be slippery.
  • Water: carry what you need—no refill points on the track.
  • Short on time? Skip a lookout spur or use the Shortcut Track early to tighten the loop.
  • Hungry? Conservation Hut at the top of Valley of the Waters is a convenient café stop at the loop’s far end.

Access and Facilities

Start/finish at Wentworth Falls Picnic Area (toilets, tables, parking). No permit required to walk; standard parking fees may apply. As with all walking tracks in Blue Mountains National Park, pets are not permitted.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely. It’s the most scenery-per-effort you’ll get around Wentworth Falls. If you want steeper adventure, drop into the Valley of the Waters from the same junctions—but for big views, geology, and a relaxed pace, the Undercliff–Overcliff circuit is the sweet spot.

Pros

  • Shady walking under sandstone overhangs—pleasant even in light drizzle
  • Clear signage with flexible loop options via Shortcut Track and Conservation Hut

Cons

  • Unfenced cliff edges in places—close supervision needed for kids
  • Overhang sections can be muddy and slick after rain
  • Popular on weekends; expect crowds near main lookouts

Parking

Park at Wentworth Falls Picnic Area; toilets and picnic tables on site. Parking fees may apply.

Caution

Unfenced cliff edges, narrow ledges, and slippery rock after rain; stairs present; no water on route; weather changes quickly.
