National Pass

This Grade 4 loop links the Wentworth Falls escarpment, the waterfall stairway and a long sandstone cliff traverse. It begins and ends at Wentworth Falls picnic area. The published circuit figure is 4.5 km (2.8 miles), while the connected path line traced from the picnic area and back measures about 5.2 km (3.2 miles). Plan for the longer mapped distance. Allow roughly 2½ to 3½ hours; a faster estimate also circulates, but the slower range better accounts for the steep steps and time at the lookouts.

The route climbs from the picnic area to Jamison Lookout, then follows stepped paths toward Fletchers Lookout and the top of Wentworth Falls. The scenery changes quickly: open views across Jamison Valley give way to sandstone walls, waterfall ledges and enclosed forest. The descent toward the falls is steep, and the Grand Stairway is the most demanding part of the walk. Take it steadily and pause where the path widens rather than stopping on narrow steps.

Built by hand in the early 1900s, the Grand Stairway was cut into the escarpment with picks and shovels, with some dynamite. Its stone steps descend beside the waterfall toward the base. The route then follows National Pass along the cliff before reaching the Valley of the Waters and returning by way of Conservation Hut and the 1 km Shortcut Track. The full circuit is memorable for the contrast between high lookouts, close waterfall views and the long ledge beneath the sandstone overhangs.

Wentworth Falls picnic area is the primary starting point, with parking and picnic and barbecue facilities. Conservation Hut is a second access point connected to the picnic area by the Shortcut Track. Expect steep stairs, uneven footing and exposed cliff edges; hidden edges need particular care. Rain can make sections impassable. Keep children close, carry drinking water, a hat and sunscreen, and check current park alerts before setting out. Pets are not permitted in the national park.
