Overview
This classic Blue Mountains circuit is short on distance and big on drama. The loop runs 4.5–4.6 km total (about 2.8–2.9 miles) and typically takes 2.5–3.5 hours depending on fitness and photo stops. It’s a Grade 4 (hard) track: steep, stepped, and exposed in places. You can start from either Wentworth Falls picnic area or the Conservation Hut carpark.
What you’ll see
Expect constant, sweeping views over the Jamison Valley, a string of waterfalls (headliners include Wentworth Falls and Empress Falls), lush ferny gullies, and sheer Triassic sandstone cliffs. The signature section is a narrow ledge literally carved into the cliff in 1906–1907—an atmospheric traverse between rock wall and airy drop. You’ll also tackle long stair runs including the historic Grand Stairway, a feat of hand‑cut engineering.
Trail feel and who it’s for
This is a strenuous, stair-heavy loop with real exposure and limited fencing along cliff sections. The path is formed and well signposted but often rough, wet, or slippery near falls. It’s best for fit, sure‑footed walkers comfortable with heights. Many manage it with older kids, but it’s not ideal for small children or anyone with vertigo.
Best time to hike
Year‑round is possible, but spring and autumn bring the most pleasant temps. Summer can be hot and exposed on the ledges; winter is crisp and can feel cold on the cliff line. Waterfalls are most impressive after rain, but sections can be slippery and occasionally impassable—time your visit for a day or two after a downpour rather than during it. Go early or midweek to dodge the crowds.
Logistics and tips
- Starts: Wentworth Falls picnic area (quick detour to Jamison Lookout for the vista) or the Conservation Hut. Toilets and water at the picnic area; café at Conservation Hut for a celebratory finish.
- Direction: Many walkers prefer anti‑clockwise to descend more of the bigger stair runs and finish with a steadier climb.
- Parking: Both the picnic area and Conservation Hut fill quickly on weekends/holidays—arrive early.
- Essentials: Grippy footwear, layers, plenty of water, and a downloaded map/GPS. Stay strictly on the marked track—there are hidden cliff edges.
Geology and nature notes
You’re walking the Blue Mountains’ signature sandstone escarpments, weathered into ledges, overhangs, and falls. Watch for fern‑filled grottos and cool-temperate rainforest pockets around the creeks and cascades—prime photo stops, especially when the flows are up.
