The route
It’s a straightforward 1.5 miles total (out‑and‑back) on a wide, gated gravel service road (FS 450). Expect a steady, moderate climb with about 350 feet of gain—never tricky, just persistent. From the Blue Ridge Parkway pull‑off, walk around the gate and follow the road uphill to the tower. For the shortest route, ignore the signed trail to Mount Pisgah Campground right at the start.
The payoff
The historic steel fire tower is the tallest lookout in western North Carolina. The cab at the very top is locked, but you can climb the open metal stairs to just below it for the full panorama. On clear days you’ll spot Cold Mountain, Mount Pisgah, and Looking Glass Rock. Note: there are several communication towers at the summit; they’re not pretty, but the views still steal the show.
Conditions and vibe
This high, exposed summit runs cooler and windier than the valleys—bring a layer even in summer. The stairs are open and airy; if you’re uneasy with heights, you may prefer the ground‑level views.
