The Watchers

Overview

Perched above the A939 near Corgarff Castle, The Watchers is a small cluster of hooded, sculptural shelters set on an exposed hillside. It’s contemporary art with a purpose: each cowl doubles as a seat, so you can tuck out of the wind and let the landscape do its thing.

Design & Sense of Place

Formed from folded steel (with Scottish larch detailing), the pieces read like helmets, hoods, or a modern stone circle—interpretations are half the fun. They’re intentionally placed for contemplation and for framing the view across remote Upper Strathdon to the white tower of Corgarff Castle.

A carved standing stone nearby (linked to the spot) has peepholes that pick out tiny vignettes of the hills and glen, plus a short inscription—worth a minute before you sit.

What You’ll See

• Four hooded “cowls,” each facing a slightly different direction, framing the moorland and castle.
• Long, rolling horizons that shift with the weather—mist, shafts of sun, brooding clouds.
• In late summer, swathes of purple heather brighten the slopes.

Wildlife

Listen for skylarks on breezy spring and summer days. Deer sometimes drift across these uplands, but it’s the birdlife and the mood of the weather that usually steal the show.

Practicalities

• Simple roadside stop: there’s a small pullout/parking area right by the installation.
• No toilets, water, food, or bins—come prepared and pack out everything.
• It’s often windy and can be cold even in summer; layers and sturdy shoes pay off.

• Crowds: Weekdays are usually quieter; weekends, late morning to mid‑afternoon, see more passers‑by.
• Seasonal bonus: Late August–September heather bloom makes photos pop; winter brings stark, beautiful contrasts if you’re dressed for it.
