More about Balmoral Castle & Estate

What the public visit includesBalmoral Castle & Estate is a royal residence at Crathie on Royal Deeside.

Balmoral Castle & Estate is a royal residence at Crathie on Royal Deeside. Public access combines its gardens and grounds with an exhibition in the Castle Ballroom, a restaurant and a gift shop. Think gardens and estate, not a room-by-room castle tour: when it is open, general admission includes the Ballroom exhibition; guided tours opening more of the interior run on selected dates. Public access changes with the season, so check which experience is available if interior rooms are your main reason to go.

Give the gardens time beyond a quick castle photo. The gardens and golf course share a 45-acre setting maintained by seven gardeners, with lawns, formal beds and wooded Highland slopes around the castle. Visitors repeatedly single out the peaceful grounds and garden walk, which are the heart of the regular visit.

Queen Mary's formal garden took shape between 1923 and 1925, with a sunken garden and fountain, later reworked to include an Alpine Terrace. The Jubilee Conservatory was built in 2002 for Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee. Planting changes with the year: daffodils in spring, summer perennials, autumn colour and evergreens through winter.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert acquired the estate in 1852, and the present castle was built in 1856 as their Highland retreat. Albert also supervised the gardens' development. The Ballroom is both the general-admission exhibition space and the setting for the annual Ghillies Ball.

The restaurant menu includes estate venison and beef burgers, Cullen skink, handmade pies, soups, cakes and sandwiches, with vegetarian and gluten-free choices. A takeaway hatch serves prepared food and drinks; dog-friendly outdoor seating is available. The estate's organic kitchen garden supplies produce and cut flowers for the household and restaurant.

From the front lawn, put the circular fountain in the foreground and the castle behind it; the stone steps lead the eye toward the clock tower and keep the garden in the picture. The formal beds and Queen Mary's sunken garden offer closer compositions, with the seasonal planting changing the foreground through the year.
