Highland Folk Museum is a mile-long open-air museum in Newtonmore, with more than 35 historic buildings showing Highland life from the 1700s to the mid-1900s. The best part is stepping inside the homes, workshops, school and farm buildings, not just looking at them from the path. Set aside a few hours if you want to reach the far township; a quick stop won't cover the whole place. Surfaces and slopes vary, so expect an outdoor walk rather than an easy indoor circuit.

The grounds move through four different landscapes: Aultlarie Croft, a 1930s working farm; Balameanach, or “Middle Village,” with relocated buildings; the Pinewoods; and Baile Gean, a reconstructed early-1700s township. That variety is what makes the site work: you see how a farm, a village and the surrounding woodland each shaped daily life.

Take your time in Baile GeanBaile Gean is the place to slow down.

Baile Gean is the place to slow down. Its thatched houses recreate a Highland township of the early 1700s, with furnished interiors that make domestic life easier to picture than a row of objects in glass cases. If you only have time for a few buildings, give this end of the grounds priority.

Look beyond the housesThe museum covers work and leisure as well as home life.

The museum covers work and leisure as well as home life. The working farm, school, joiner's workshop and other craft buildings show different jobs and skills across the Highlands. Look into the rooms as well as at the outside: furnishings and tools are what turn the buildings into a story about how people lived.

How the collection beganDr Isabel F.

Dr Isabel F. Grant started the museum on Iona in 1936, calling it Am Fasgadh, Gaelic for “The Shelter.” She was collecting the material culture of Highland life as older ways of living were disappearing. The collection moved to a disused church in Laggan, then to a site in Kingussie that opened in 1944. The Newtonmore museum opened in 1987, bringing the collection into the landscape it now interprets.

The café serves soup, sandwiches, drinks and cakes, and Kirk's Store has traditional sweets in jars. There are picnic areas by the play park and near Reception, including a covered spot by the School building. Admission is free with donations welcomed, and parking is paid. The museum is a short walk from Newtonmore, which has bus and train services. The main reception and café have level access, but the wider site is only partly wheelchair accessible: paths vary in surface and gradient.
