Before you go

Plan for rough, remote access

From Hans Flat Ranger Station, the pullout is about 8.9 miles south on the road toward the Flint Trail. NPS recommends high-clearance AWD/4WD for the approach, and high-clearance 4WD is required on the Flint Trail and roads below. Check current road conditions before leaving: rain can change access quickly, and cell service is unreliable. There are no services at the pullout; the nearest restrooms and picnic table are at Hans Flat Ranger Station.

Bagpipe Butte Overlook is a signed roadside pullout on NP-633 in Canyonlands’ remote Maze District. A sandy path of about 200–250 feet ends at a cliff-edge view of the multi-pinnacled butte rising from the basin roughly a mile away. It’s a rewarding short stop if you’re already on this road; the remote drive is the real commitment.

From the rim, look east across the basin to the La Sal Mountains; Elaterite Butte stands northeast of the view. Bagpipe Butte’s jagged pinnacles are said to resemble organ pipes or the drones of a bagpipe, though no official naming record was found. For a photo, leave some basin in the frame so the pinnacles’ rise from the canyon reads clearly. The viewpoint has no guardrail, so stay back from the edge.
