Flint Trail Overlook is a small pullout above the tight switchbacks at the top of the Flint Trail in the Maze. A roughly 250-foot walk across slickrock reaches the rim. It’s a worthwhile pause if you’re already making this remote drive; the approach is a much bigger commitment than the stop.

From the rim, you can trace the switchbacks below and look across the Maze to the Mother and Child formation along the Dollhouse Road, with the Island in the Sky, the Needles and the La Sal Mountains beyond. Take a look here before deciding to descend: tight turns can force longer vehicles to back up. For a photo, keep the switchbacks below the rim with the wider Maze behind them.

Plan for remote roadsThe pullout is about 11.

The pullout is about 11.8 road miles from Hans Flat Ranger Station on NP-633, and it’s easy to pass. The approach from UT-24 to Hans Flat is about 45 miles of dirt road. Maze backcountry roads require high-clearance 4WD with low range; NPS recommends high-clearance 4WD or AWD from Hans Flat to the top of Flint Trail, and requires high-clearance 4WD for the descent and roads below. Rain and snow can quickly change conditions, so check with the district before setting out. There are no facilities at the pullout; restrooms and a picnic table are back at Hans Flat.
