Beulach Ban Falls is a 21-metre waterfall on the north side of Cape Breton Highlands National Park, reached from Beulach Ban Falls Road off the Cabot Trail. Water steps down a broad rock face into a wooded hollow. Keep it on your northern Cabot Trail day if you want a close waterfall stop without taking on a long hike. Its flow can look modest in a dry spell, so it is more impressive after rain.
From the base, step back enough to keep the full cascade and its sloping rock ledges in the frame. The wooded banks make the white water stand out, and autumn brings yellow and gold leaves around the falls. This is a better stop when there's been rain; in a dry stretch, expect less water over the ledges.
The same trailhead is the start of the Aspy Trail, a 9.6-kilometre return hike rated moderate to difficult. It climbs from about 60 to 450 metres through Acadian and mixed forest along the Aspy fault. That is a much bigger outing than the waterfall visit, so decide whether you want the short stop or the full hike before setting off.
