Black Brook Beach

Black Brook Beach is an Atlantic cove on the Ingonish side of Cape Breton Highlands National Park, where a freshwater brook crosses the shore and tumbles over a small waterfall. The sandspit at the brook mouth shifts with tides and currents. It makes a rewarding beach and picnic stop, but treat swimming as conditions-dependent: Parks Canada warns that undertows here can be particularly strong, and there are no surf guards.

The beach is just off the Cabot Trail. The paved parking area is north of the brook, with a short descent toward the beach; beyond the boardwalk, loose stones and driftwood make the footing uneven. Waves can reach the cobbles at high tide. Reaching the waterfall means picking your way over boulders, so the beach access and the falls are not the same easy walk.

Picnic facilities sit on both sides of Black Brook. The north area has paved accessible parking, an accessible washroom that may require assistance, and an accessible picnic table; the south area has a minimally accessible washroom. The park lists washrooms, change rooms, a kitchen shelter, playground and picnic area. A national-park pass is required to use park facilities.

The cove's rock belongs to the Devonian Black Brook Granitic Suite, formed about 375 million years ago. Look for black flecks in the grey granite and thin pink-orange mineral veins that cut across it. Rain makes those colors stand out, so the rocky shoreline has more to notice than its big view.

From the shore, line up the brook-mouth sandspit with the pine-topped headland; the small waterfall is visible at the rocky end of the beach. The spit changes shape with tides and currents, so the foreground won't look the same on every visit. Wet rock after rain also brings the granite's pink-orange veins into sharper contrast.
