Lone Shieling

Lone Shieling is a replica of a Scottish crofter’s hut in Grande Anse Valley, at the start of a short interpretive loop through old-growth hardwood forest. This is a brief stop, not a substantial hike: the loop is 0.6 km (0.4 mi), rated easy, and takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The hut and forest make a good pause if you like small historic sites; if you’re saving room for one longer walk, keep that tradeoff in mind.

The trailhead is on the Cabot Trail at the base of North Mountain. The hut sits at the beginning of the loop, and the path is the only permitted way into this protected old-growth forest, so stay on it to avoid trampling the ground. The official estimates differ slightly, at 15 minutes for the trail and 20 for the sightseeing walk; allow 15 to 20 minutes.

Professor Donald S. MacIntosh, a Pleasant Bay native, left 100 acres to Nova Scotia and asked for a small park with a cabin modeled on the Lone Shieling on the Isle of Skye. The shelter was built in 1942. An interpretive exhibit explains what a shieling was used for in Scotland and why the hut was built here. A memorial marker at the site also reproduces lines from the poem “The Lone Shieling,” which looks back toward the Hebrides.

The hut stands in one of the Maritimes’ largest old-growth hardwood forests. Sugar maple dominates the valley, with trees described as centuries old. The short loop is the way to experience this woodland without widening the foot traffic through it.

Moose use the area, and the forest is home to rare rock voles and Gaspé shrews. You may not see them on a short walk, but they’re part of what makes this small patch of old forest worth protecting.
