Green Cove Trail

Overview

This is the park’s definition of a leg‑stretcher: a 0.1‑mile (0.2 km) return walk from a pullout on the Cabot Trail to a rocky headland. It’s genuinely easy and takes about 10 minutes, but many people linger. Think viewpoint with a short path, not a proper hike—worth it for the scenery, not the mileage.

What You’ll See

The path spills onto broad granite slabs with surf thundering below and wide‑open Atlantic views. Scan the water for seals hauled out on offshore rocks and, in season, the occasional whale far out. Hug the ground for details too: wind‑shaped krummholz trees and leathery‑leafed bayberry that survive the salt spray and constant gusts. On calm days you might even spot fishermen tending lobster traps offshore.

Safety and Access

From the signed lot, the trail begins right at the parking area and quickly reaches uneven rock. Stay well back from cliff edges—rogue waves and strong winds are common. Dark or wet rock is slick, and there are crevices between boulders if you wander off the path. Dogs are allowed on leash. A park pass is required year‑round, and recreational drones are not permitted in the park.

Best Time to Hike

Open year‑round, with full visitor services typically mid‑May to mid‑October. Turnover is fast even when it’s busy, so a short wait often nets you elbow room. It’s almost always breezy—bring a wind layer. For photography, sunrise or sunset light flatters the pink‑toned granite and Atlantic swells.
