Still Brook Falls

Still Brook Falls is a 6 m cascade on Still Brook at the north end of Black Brook Beach. You can spot it from the Cabot Trail as you drive north toward the beach, but it is easy to miss if you do not know to look for it. It makes a worthwhile short add-on to a beach visit; on its own, expect a brief stop.

The upper side of the falls is 150 m from the Jack Pine trailhead. For a closer look at the base, start from the beach stairs and cross about 160 m of shoreline rocks. That route is usually accessible only at low tide and is rated moderate, so check the tide and footing before setting out. For a view without the rocky approach, look toward the falls while driving north on the Cabot Trail.

The falls border one end of Black Brook Beach, where a freshwater brook crosses the shore beside the ocean. The beach day-use area has washrooms, change rooms, a kitchen shelter, a playground and a picnic area; those facilities are by the beach, not at the falls. If you swim, heed the park's warning that currents at Black Brook can be particularly strong.

The waterfall is on Still Brook, which empties into Black Brook Cove at the beach's north end. Black Brook is a separate stream that reaches the cove at the south end. From the beach, the two ends give you a quick way to see how a small freshwater stream meets the ocean here.

From the beach, try a view that includes the cascade, the brook and a slice of the ocean edge. The sandspit shifts with tides and currents, so the shoreline foreground changes too. The close-up waterfall view in the photo takes you among the exposed rock ledges.
