Whalebone Junction Information Center

This small visitor center sits on NC 12 just past Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s north entrance in Nags Head. It’s a useful first pause for a park map, newspaper or current beach conditions before you continue south. Think of it as a practical information stop, not a full museum visit.

A short path starts at the center and passes through the woods to an 1848 coastal survey marker, tied to an early survey by Benjamin Franklin’s grandson. It’s a worthwhile leg-stretcher if a maps-and-restrooms stop feels too brief. The name Whalebone Junction belongs to the wider crossroads, where US 64, US 158 and NC 12 meet: a gas station displayed a whale skeleton in the 1930s, and the name stuck after the station burned and the bones moved.

Coming from Nags Head or Manteo, head south on NC 12; the center is just beyond the seashore entrance sign on the right. There’s surface parking, flush restrooms, a picnic area and a ramp to the building. Two spaces are marked for accessible parking; neither is designated for vans, and one is unsigned.
