Coquina Beach is an established Atlantic swim beach on Bodie Island, at the northern end of Cape Hatteras National Seashore near Nags Head. It’s the easy drive-to-the-ocean option here: pull off NC-12, park by the bathhouse, and take a boardwalk over the dunes to the sand. A second, primitive path reaches the beach at the northeast end of the northern lot. If you want a proper beach break while touring Bodie Island, this is the access to use. The Bodie Island Lighthouse access road is directly opposite, so the two fit naturally into the same outing. At the water, expect open sand, Atlantic surf, and a low dune edge dotted with beach grass rather than a built promenade.

In summer, the National Park Service describes a lifeguarded swimming area and an open bathhouse. That makes this a handy choice for a longer beach stop: there’s a place to change, rinse off, and use the restroom, with the lifeguarded area there during its operating season. The bathhouse has 14 changing rooms, two accessible, four outdoor showers, bathrooms, and a drinking fountain and bottle-filling station while the building is open. Parking is spread among three lots north and south of the bathhouse, including accessible spaces; the northern lot also has spaces for longer vehicles. These facilities make the visit easier, but they don’t turn the shore into a sheltered pool.

Swimming is the obvious draw, but visitors also come to walk, surf fish, shell, surf, and bodyboard. The name comes from colorful coquina clams reported along Outer Banks beaches, especially in the warmer months; keep an eye on the sand for their small shells when they’re around. For a beach photo, keep both the breaking water and a little dune grass in the frame. The wide view shows the contrast between the foamy surf and the low, shifting sand behind it; cropping to only sky and water loses the part that makes this beach feel like Bodie Island. The boardwalk carries you through the dune line before you reach the open shore.

Plan for the oceanCoquina Beach access is right off NC-12, directly across from the Bodie Island Lighthouse…

Coquina Beach access is right off NC-12, directly across from the Bodie Island Lighthouse access road between Nags Head and Oregon Inlet. Take the bathhouse boardwalk for the main beach approach; the other path, at the northeast end of the north lot, is primitive. The lifeguarded area and bathhouse are seasonal, and exact 2026 dates and hours weren’t confirmed, so check current park information before counting on those services. The drinking fountain and bottle filler are available only while the bathhouse is open. Two changing rooms and several parking spaces are identified as accessible, but beach-wheelchair availability wasn’t verified.

Give the surf a real look before getting in. The park warns that rough waves and rip currents can make swimming dangerous, even close to shore. When the water is rough, make this a walk-and-watch stop instead; there’s still plenty of Atlantic shoreline to take in.
