Get close enough to see the tower’s taper: it is about 25 feet across at the base and 12 feet at the top. The Double Keepers’ Quarters stands with smaller historic support buildings, including an oil house, generator house, privy, storehouse, and carpenter’s shop. Together, they show how much had to happen around a light before modern navigation systems. The tower’s upper levels are not open to visitors; its narrow doors and steep ladders make climbing unsafe. The base has limited seasonal viewing, so ask at the Ocracoke Discovery Center whether interior access is available during your visit.
