Chimney Rock Overlook

Overview

Chimney Rock Overlook is a classic short outing off UT‑24, reached via the Chimney Rock Trail. The loop is about 3.5–3.6 miles with roughly 580–800 feet of gain—moderate overall, but it starts with a stout set of switchbacks. It’s popular for good reason: quick effort, big views, and a front‑row look at one of the park’s most recognizable rock towers.

Trail & Effort

Expect a brisk climb out of the gate, then more moderate terrain along the loop. Many hikers call this one of the park’s best short hikes because the views arrive fast. Short on time or energy? You can hike up to the overlook and return the same way instead of completing the full loop. Plan on about two hours for the loop if you’re moving steadily.

Best Time to Visit

Sunset lights up the red rock beautifully, making this an excellent photography stop late in the day. Midday can be busier and much hotter—start early or go late to beat the heat and share the trail with fewer people. The area is accessible year‑round, but summer heat is no joke.

Geology

Chimney Rock is composed of red Moenkopi sandstone capped by the Chinle formation—layers dating back roughly 245 million years. From the overlook you can read the landscape: the dramatic monocline of the Waterpocket Fold, colorful badlands, and even a faulted zone where the Chinle layer is vertically displaced.

Wildlife

Keep an eye out for desert regulars—lizards skittering over warm rock, small mammals in the scrub, and birds riding afternoon thermals. It’s more about the geology here, but the desert is alive if you pause and look.

Logistics

There’s a signed trailhead with a parking area along UT‑24. Carry plenty of water (none on the trail) and bring solid sun protection; shade is scarce.
