Panorama Point

Panorama Point is a roadside overlook on UT-24 in Capitol Reef’s Fruita area. A very short walk from the parking area brings you to a 360-degree panorama over sandstone cliffs. It’s a good stop when you want a sweeping red-rock view without adding a hike. Some visitors find it modest beside the park’s bigger canyon and trail scenery, so treat it as a quick scenic pause rather than the whole event.

Turn in every direction across layered sandstone and juniper-dotted country. Recognizable shapes in the view include Chimney Rock and The Castle. The cliffs pick up richer color near sunset, and the open high point is also a good place to look at the night sky.

The landscape sits along the Waterpocket Fold, a nearly 100-mile-long bend in the earth’s rock layers. Movement along a buried fault bent the layers 50–70 million years ago; the west side now stands more than 7,000 feet above matching layers to the east. Erosion has carved the uplift into cliffs, domes, spires, canyons, and arches.

Nearly 10,000 feet of sedimentary rock records almost 200 million years of changing environments, from rivers and swamps to desert and shallow sea. The layers span roughly 270-million-year-old Permian rock to 80-million-year-old Cretaceous rock. At the overlook, even the red Moenkopi sandstone carries curved ripple marks.

The name joins two shapes: pale Navajo Sandstone domes reminded early observers of the U.S. Capitol, while the Waterpocket Fold acted as a barrier to travel like an ocean reef. The area became a national monument in 1937 and a national park in 1971.

Turn off UT-24 about 2.5 miles west of the visitor center, park, and follow the very brief walk to the viewpoint. Parking and interpretive information are available at the stop. The path’s surface and slope aren’t described, so check ahead if you need a confirmed accessible route. Leashed pets may be in public parking areas and within 50 feet of public roads; their access on the short path isn’t specified.
