Overview

King's Palace is the park’s showcase ranger-guided experience, taking you roughly 830 feet underground to the deepest area open to the public. The route winds through four ornate limestone chambers—the King’s Palace Room, Queen’s Chamber, Papoose Room, and the Iceberg area—each dripping with delicate formations. Tours typically depart from near the Big Room and elevator area and are led by rangers who bring the geology and history to life.

What You’ll See

Spectacular formations: helictites, thin draperies, soda straws, columns, and flowstone throughout.
The Iceberg: an imposing rockfall of massive boulders wedged overhead—equal parts dramatic and humbling.

How the Tour Works

Ranger-led only; no self-guided access to this section.
Plan on about 1.5 hours and roughly 1 mile of walking on paved pathways with some steep sections, including a very steep uphill at the end.
Group size is limited, and spots are popular—reserve in advance. A dedicated King’s Palace Photo Tour variant exists for photographers; it follows a similar distance, adds time for photo stops, and still finishes with the steep climb.

What to Bring (and What Not to)

Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip and bring a light jacket; the cave stays around 56°F/13°C year-round.
Carry minimal gear—space is tight—and bring water in a sealed container.
To protect bats from white‑nose syndrome, do not wear clothing or shoes or bring gear that has been in other caves.
There are no restrooms underground on this tour; use facilities at the Visitor Center before you head down.

Wildlife

Wildlife sightings deep in King’s Palace are rare. If bats are on your wishlist, plan for the park’s evening bat flight program topside rather than this tour.

Best Time to Visit

This is one of the park’s most in-demand tours and can be the only regularly offered ranger-led option at times, so reservations go fast—book as early as you can, especially in peak seasons. Because the cave temperature and lighting are constant, outside weather and sun angle don’t matter here; focus on securing the reservation that fits your schedule.
