Guadalupe Ridge Trail

Guadalupe Ridge Trail is a difficult 12-mile point-to-point hike from the Guadalupe Ridge Road gate on Desert Loop Road west toward the park boundary. This is the park-focused stretch of a much longer regional route, not the whole through-hike. The local description lists 2,050 feet of elevation change and about 14 hours for most hikers. It names the gate but not the far endpoint or whether the 12 miles are one way; the mapped gate-to-west-boundary line is about 12 miles, so this guide treats it as the one-way traverse. Confirm your pickup location before setting out. Choose it for a full-day desert ridge hike; skip it if you need a short walk or a clearly marked loop.

The ridge crosses dry Chihuahuan Desert country, with wide views over the basin and into Slaughter Canyon. Fawn Valley Overlook opens north across a broad, scrub-covered valley; a broken limestone rim frames the foreground and low ridges fade into the distance. This is a big-landscape payoff rather than a walk to one summit or waterfall. If a quiet, open ridge is what you want, that’s the draw.

The GRT’s tread varies from two to six feet wide, with loose or hardened rock underfoot. In the Carlsbad backcountry, sections can be faint and signage is sparse, so bring a paper map and know how you’ll navigate; don’t count on cairns alone. The length and footing make this a hard hike even without a technical scramble.

The Guadalupe Ridge is part of the exposed fossil reef that shapes the Guadalupe Mountains. It was built in an ancient sea and later lifted into the limestone ridges and canyons you see now. The broader GRT follows this reef across two states and several public lands; the Carlsbad stretch gives you a close look at its dry, broken edge.

Water along the ridge is scarce and unreliable. Carry what you need for the full day and don’t plan around a spring or stock tank. This is point-to-point, with no public shuttle serving the broader GRT, so arrange a pickup or a second vehicle at the far end. A free backcountry permit is required for overnight stays in the park. Pets aren’t allowed, except individually trained service animals.
