Overview

Perched above the Natural Entrance, the Carlsbad Caverns Visitor Center is the park’s nerve center—where your underground adventure really starts. Inside you’ll find ticketing, rangers ready to help you plan, excellent exhibits, a short park film, a bookstore/gift shop, and a café. It’s also the only place to access the elevators that drop roughly 750 feet into the cave, or to step onto the Natural Entrance trail.

Starting Your Cave Visit

Your entrance fee covers self‑guided exploration of the Big Room and Natural Entrance routes. Check in at the info/ticket counter, then choose your path: hike the steep Natural Entrance down or ride the elevator. If you want a bit more interpretation without a group, consider renting the audio guide from the visitor center store.

Bat Flight and Wildlife

Right outside is the Bat Flight Amphitheater, where thousands of bats pour from the cave at dusk in season—ask the information desk for current timing and viewing guidance. Around the building you may spot desert birds, lizards, or small mammals; inside, exhibits highlight the creatures above and below ground.

History & Geology You’ll Learn Here

The visitor center sits atop a 250‑million‑year‑old fossil reef. Exhibits walk you through how acidic water carved the caverns and how speleothems grow. You’ll also see the human story of exploration and the 1930s-era elevator system that made the deep cave accessible from the rim.

Food & Facilities

Expect modern restrooms, a large parking area, a café/snack bar, and a well‑stocked bookstore/gift shop—all convenient if you’re heading straight underground afterward.

Fees

Entrance is typically $15 per person ages 16+ (free for 15 and under) and is covered by America the Beautiful and other federal lands passes.

Best Time to Visit

This place pulses around midday—especially on weekends—when elevator lines and exhibits get crowded. Aim for right at opening or after about 3 pm for a calmer start. If you’re planning the bat flight, arrive well before dusk to get oriented and grab a seat.

• Bring a light jacket—temperatures underground hover around 56°F/13°C.
• Use the restrooms before you descend; facilities underground are limited.
