Natural Entrance Trail

Overview

This is the park’s signature walk into the cave—1.25 miles one way from the Natural Entrance down to the main cavern level, dropping more than 750 feet. It’s paved, consistently steep (sections reach very steep grades with tight switchbacks), and typically takes around 1 hour to descend. Most visitors walk down and ride the elevator back up; ascending the trail is much more strenuous and generally only for those in excellent condition.

What You’ll See

You’ll step from daylight into the cave’s twilight zone and follow the tall, spacious Main Corridor deeper underground. Along the way, look for signed highlights such as the Bat Cave near the start, dramatic breakdown areas like Devil’s Den and Devil’s Pit, the massive Iceberg Rock, and the maze-like Boneyard. Subtle lighting along the route shows off stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and huge rooms without ruining the atmosphere.

Difficulty and Conditions

Don’t be fooled by the pavement—this is a sustained descent that can burn quads and knees. Surfaces may be damp and slick; use the handrails and take your time. The cave is a cool ~56°F year-round, so bring a light jacket even in summer. The path is steep and narrow in places and is not wheelchair accessible; the elevator provides an alternative to reach the Big Room level.

Logistics and Facilities

Start at the Natural Entrance near the Visitor Center and Bat Flight Amphitheater. There are restrooms at the Visitor Center and again at the very bottom by the elevators—but none on the trail itself. Photography is allowed (no tripods or selfie sticks). Timed entry tickets are often required, and seasonal maintenance can affect access—plan ahead.

Best Time to Hike

The route is open year-round and stays a comfortable temperature regardless of the weather topside. For a bonus, visit late spring through early fall and pair your day’s descent with the evening bat flight at the amphitheater. Mornings tend to be a bit less crowded on the trail; aim for earlier starts if you prefer a quieter descent. Any season, check current park alerts and ticket availability before you go.

Is It Worth It?

If you’re able to handle the grade, absolutely. Walking in via the Natural Entrance delivers a sense of scale and adventure you won’t get by taking the elevator down, and it sets up a perfect follow-up: the Big Room loop once you reach the bottom.
