If you’ve only seen the underground side of the park, this is the aboveground counterpoint—wide horizons, layered limestone, and classic Chihuahuan Desert scenery.

Getting There & Context

The overlook sits off the park’s surface road network, with area access via the unpaved Walnut Canyon Desert Drive. The Lower Rattlesnake Canyon Trailhead is along this same road (past interpretive marker #4), so it’s easy to pair a short stop at the overlook with a stroll on the nearby trail network. Wildlife

This is open desert country. Look for raptors riding thermals over the canyon, lizards skittering over warm rock, and—true to the name—rattlesnakes. Cooler hours (early and late) improve your odds for seeing mule deer or coyotes moving across the rim.
