Underground Lunchroom

Overview

Tucked roughly 750 feet below the surface, the Underground Lunchroom is the park’s novelty snack bar and rest area in the heart of the cave. It’s the one designated place inside the caverns where you can actually eat—everywhere else underground, only plain water is allowed. Expect a quick break spot, not a destination meal.

What You’ll Find

Think grab-and-go: refrigerated sandwiches, simple snacks, and drinks. Seating is set up cafeteria-style, with plenty of tables to rest your legs. You’ll also find restrooms nearby, a small gift counter, and the elevator base close at hand—handy if you came down the shaft or plan to ride back up.

Why It’s Unique

You’re literally having a snack inside an enormous limestone cavern. The signature touch is the little underground mailbox where you can drop a postcard that gets a distinctive “mailed from 750 feet below ground” mark—a fun souvenir that people remember.

Cave Rules That Matter Here

Food belongs only in the Lunchroom area to protect the cave environment. Outside this zone, stick to plain water. That policy exists for good reason; cooked foods in the past were phased out in favor of prepackaged, cold items to reduce wildlife attraction and impacts.

Expectations Check

This is about convenience and the story you’ll tell later, not culinary fireworks. The menu is small, portions are basic, and prices reflect the setting. Service is lunch-focused and can be limited; operations may be paused at times, so plan accordingly.

Best Time to Visit

Use it as your midpoint break—either after hiking down the Natural Entrance before tackling the Big Room, or post–Big Room before heading out. If it’s operating, aim for lunchtime. The caverns run cool year-round, so a light layer makes the stop more comfortable.
