“Up ahead is the Echo Canyon trailhead, where a short hike takes you into the Grottoes' narrow stone passages. For a taste of the rock maze, choose the one-point-two-mile round trip and allow thirty to sixty minutes.”

Big Balanced Rock is a huge boulder perched on a much narrower stone base among Chiricahua’s rhyolite towers, near the Heart of Rocks Loop. It’s a proper hike destination, not a roadside stop. If close views of the formations are why you came, this one earns the effort; if you’re after a quick taste of the rock country, choose the shorter walk at Massai Point.

Plan for a strenuous hikeReaching the Heart of Rocks Loop takes at least 7.

Reaching the Heart of Rocks Loop takes at least 7.3 miles round trip and plenty of climbing over rock steps. The longer Big Loop from the Echo Canyon trailhead is 9.5 miles. There are three approaches to Heart of Rocks, all about the same distance. Once you reach the loop, start on the left and walk clockwise for the easier direction and best views. This is a substantial hike for one landmark, though the route passes many other formations along the way.

The half-mile Massai Point Nature Trail gives you a much easier look at balanced rocks, but it does not reach Big Balanced Rock. Take that loop if time or energy is short; make the longer hike only if you want this particular boulder and the Heart of Rocks formations around it.

These pillars are made of rhyolite tuff, rock formed when ash and volcanic debris from an eruption about 27 million years ago settled and hardened. The eruption created the roughly 12-mile-wide Turkey Creek Caldera. Cracks and erosion gradually opened the tuff into the towers and narrow supports you see today.

More than one balanced rockBig Balanced Rock is one of several named formations on the Heart of Rocks route.

Big Balanced Rock is one of several named formations on the Heart of Rocks route. Pinnacle Balanced Rock is another feature on the same hike, a separate formation with its own name. Leave time to look around; the route’s changing shapes are part of the payoff, not just the famous boulder.

This is a photo stop once you’ve made the hike. Get the narrow stone support beneath the boulder in the frame; that’s what makes the balance clear, while the wider view shows how the rock sits among the surrounding pillars.

Before you drive upCarry food and water for the hike. Pets aren’t allowed on the trails.

Carry food and water for the hike. Pets aren’t allowed on the trails. The upper scenic drive has a 24-foot vehicle limit and no trailers, so check your vehicle before heading up.
