Trail guide
Echo Canyon Grottoes Trail is an out-and-back on Echo Canyon Trail, starting at Echo Canyon Parking and dropping to a cluster of tunnel-like rock formations. The marked short outing is 1.2 miles round trip and takes about 30 to 60 minutes. It gets you among the rocks without the commitment of the separate 3.3-mile Echo Canyon Loop.
The mileage depends on where you turn: about 1 mile round trip if you return from the Grottoes, 1.2 miles to the window-and-switchback marker beyond them, or roughly 1.5 miles if you continue another quarter mile to the farther switchbacks. This route follows the 1.2-mile option.
Start down Echo Canyon Trail and stay right at its signed branch. The path descends among balanced boulders and pinnacles. The Grottoes are about half a mile down on your right; their small sign is easy to pass, so keep looking toward the rock walls. The formations are close-set passages and openings among stacked boulders, with a window of sky framed by the stone. Continue to the marked window and switchbacks, then return the way you came.
The trail loses about 200 feet by the Grottoes. Loose rock and uneven footing make the descent slower than the short mileage suggests, and you climb the same ground on the way back. The route is steep and rocky, not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, and a few spots may feel uncomfortable if heights bother you. Don’t climb on the rock formations. For a photo, use one of the narrow openings to frame a patch of sky; the surrounding walls show their scale better than a close-up of one boulder.
Echo Canyon Parking has pit toilets but no water, and the lot can fill on winter weekends. Pets aren’t allowed on the upper trails through the rocks. The walk is possible year-round, but summer heat and monsoon storms can be serious, and ice can linger after winter snow.
