Swamp Boardwalk

Overview

This elevated loop is the park’s signature stroll—an easy wander straight into a living cypress–tupelo swamp and old-growth hardwood forest. You get the swamp experience without mud or wading, just the creak of boards, cathedral‑tall trees, and the chorus of birds and insects.

What Makes It Special

Expect cypress knees poking up like wooden stalagmites, colossal loblolly pines and beech, and a true floodplain forest that still feels wild. The route includes roughly 2.4–2.6 miles of boardwalk with numbered stops and benches, so you can learn and linger as you go.

Highlights Along the Way

• Weston Lake overlook: an old river channel that often hosts turtles, sunfish, gar, and wading birds.
• Seasonal drama: after rains, reflections and high water transform the forest; during drier spells, you’ll see more of the swamp floor and those photogenic cypress knees.
• Summer blooms can surprise you—keep an eye for specialty plants noted in park materials.

Wildlife

Listen for woodpeckers working the trunks and watch for owls toward dusk. On warm days, lizards, dragonflies, and butterflies patrol the edges; in the water, turtles are common, and lucky visitors spot egrets or other waders.

Need to Know

Flooding happens several times a year and can close sections—check conditions at the visitor center before starting. The boardwalk can be slick when wet. Bugs are part of the deal here; bring repellent and reapply as needed.

Best Time to Visit

Early mornings are your sweet spot for cooler temps, calmer air, and more wildlife. Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends. After heavy rain, arrive early to navigate any partial closures and to catch mirror‑flat reflections; in hot months, aim to start around opening to beat heat and humidity.

If You Have More Time

Branch to connected paths like Sims or the Weston Lake Loop for a deeper dive into the floodplain forest, then circle back via the boardwalk for an easy finish.
