The Harry Hampton Visitor Center is Congaree’s staffed welcome and orientation hub, with maps, ranger help, exhibits, a park film, and a store. If this is your first visit, start here: get your bearings and ask how to shape the day before heading into the floodplain.
Natural and cultural-history exhibits introduce the forest and the people who have lived and worked here; the park film gives you the wider picture. Look for the wooden mosquito meter, a playful exhibit with a scale for mosquito levels.
Harry Hampton was a local newspaper editor and hunt-club member who explored the Congaree floodplain. His newspaper columns helped build support for protecting its old-growth forest. After a later preservation campaign, Congress established Congaree Swamp National Monument in 1976. That story connects the center’s exhibits to the forest outside.
The park store focuses on park-related books, media, educational games, and other interpretive goods. It’s a handy place to browse before or after a walk, especially if you want something for a curious kid to take home.
