Game Lodge Campground

Overview

Game Lodge Campground is the park’s most convenient base camp, tucked along Coolidge Creek beside the historic State Game Lodge area. It blends scenery with creature comforts: mature shade trees, the sound of running water, and well-kept facilities.

Campsites & Cabins

You’ll find a mix of tent and RV sites plus a cluster of camping cabins (a highlight here). Many sites sit right on the creek; tent pads are elevated and each site has a picnic table. Expect flush toilets and hot showers in season, drinking water spigots, a dump station, and a coin-op laundry (opens around early May). Vault toilets remain available when the main bathhouses are closed.

Wildlife

This is one of the best spots in the park to encounter wildlife from camp. Bison are known to wander the cabin loop and nearby open areas. Deer and wild turkeys are common, and the broader lodge area sees the park’s famous "begging burros" on occasion. Give animals plenty of space and be patient—bison traffic can pause your plans for a few minutes.

Family-Friendly Perks

A playground and paved walking path follow the creek, making easy strolls with kids simple. There’s also a small swimming beach adjacent to the campground along Grace Coolidge Creek when the weather’s warm.

Location & Access

You’re minutes from marquee drives like the Wildlife Loop and Needles Highway, and near the State Game Lodge hub with dining and a general store/fuel down the road (not inside the campground). It’s an effortless launching point for full park days.

What’s Not Perfect

In peak summer, this popular campground feels busy and sites can be close to neighbors. A few low-lying tent spots can collect water in heavy rain—study site photos and pick carefully if storms are in the forecast.

Best Time to Visit

• Spring and fall: Quieter loops, cooler nights, and great wildlife activity at dawn/dusk.
• Summer: Book early and arrive midday to settle in before the evening rush; shoot photos at golden hour along the creek.
• Winter: Expect vault toilets only; most water/shower facilities are closed.
