Overview

A popular out-and-back from Boston Mill Visitor Center, this Buckeye Trail segment packs more punch than its length suggests. Plan on 3.0 miles total (round trip) with roughly 580 feet of up-and-down. Many hikers record closer to 2.5 miles depending on exactly where they start, but budget 1–2 hours either way. The payoff is Blue Hen Falls, a 15‑foot cascade pouring over layered shale—small by waterfall standards, but undeniably photogenic when water is running.

What the hike feels like

From the visitor center, follow the blue blazes. You’ll climb immediately (~200 feet), descend long stairs to a creek footbridge, then tackle a second hill that skirts a maintenance area. You’ll carefully cross Boston Mills Road near the top, then wind through forest and down a broken old asphalt section to the falls overlook. Expect dirt singletrack with roots and rocks, multiple staircases, and muddy sections after rain or snowmelt. Traction matters here—sturdy shoes make this feel pleasant instead of slick.

Crowds, noise, and vibe

This is one of the park’s busier short hikes. Go early or later in the day for easier parking and a quieter falls. You’ll likely hear road and highway noise on parts of the approach—this is an urban-edge park—so set expectations accordingly. Despite that, the variety of terrain keeps the out-and-back engaging, and the falls area invites lingering when flow is good.

Logistics and rules

Park at Boston Mill Visitor Center or the nearby Boston Trailhead; restrooms and drinking water are available at the visitor center, not at the falls. The old roadside lot near Blue Hen Falls is closed, so plan on the full hike. Stay on the marked Buckeye Trail (blue blazes) and do not walk along Boston Mills Road. Use extra caution at both road crossings. Dogs are welcome but must be on leash at all times. Swimming at the falls isn’t recommended.

Best time to hike

Year-round. Flow is best after rain or snowmelt—also when the trail is muddiest. Fall color adds a lot, and winter can bring beautiful ice. Weekends and warm afternoons are packed; dawn or late day offers easier parking and softer light at the falls. If the ground is icy, save this for a drier day unless you have traction aids.

Is it worth it?

If you’re craving a short but legit workout with real elevation changes and a classic Cuyahoga Valley scene, yes. The falls are small, and some find the overlook underwhelming if water is low, but the journey is surprisingly fun for a three‑miler. Want a bigger waterfall with less climbing? Consider nearby Brandywine Falls. Want a longer, quieter day? Start from the Jaite Trailhead and follow the Buckeye Trail toward Blue Hen for extra miles.

Pros

  • Varied terrain (stairs, bridge, old asphalt) keeps a short hike engaging
  • Easy start logistics: parking, water, and restrooms at Boston Mill

Cons

  • Noticeable traffic noise along stretches of the approach
  • Two road crossings break the forest flow and require caution

Parking

Park at Boston Mill Visitor Center or the Boston Trailhead; the old roadside lot near Blue Hen Falls is closed. Restrooms and drinking water are at the visitor center. Lots fill on pleasant weekends—arrive early or later in the day.

Caution

Steep climbs and long stair sections can be slick when wet or icy; expect mud after rain. Use extra care at road crossings and stay on the marked Buckeye Trail—do not walk along Boston Mills Road. No swimming recommended at the falls.
