Overview

A scenic, hilly approach to Brandywine Falls, the Stanford Trail runs 1.5 miles one way from Stanford Road to the waterfall. Expect an unpaved path with several steep sections and the usual roots, rocks, and mud after rain. As an out-and-back, you’re looking at about 3.0 miles total. If you want more, you can link the falls area with the Brandywine Gorge Trail for a moderate loop that’s roughly 3.5–3.8 miles with about 400–450 feet of gain, typically taking 1.5–2 hours.

Route Options

  • Out-and-back: Follow the Stanford Trail 1.5 miles to the Brandywine Falls boardwalk and viewing platforms, then return the same way (about 3.0 miles total).
  • Loop option: Near the falls, pick up the Brandywine Gorge Trail to circle the gorge and reconnect, mixing dirt path, gravel, steps, and boardwalk. Note that there is currently no bridge across Brandywine Creek on the gorge loop—more on that below.

What You’ll See

This is a forested ramble with Brandywine Creek and a pond near Stanford House as you set out. The headliner is Brandywine Falls, where hard Berea Sandstone caps the drop and protects the softer shales beneath. Those thinly layered shales help create the delicate “bridal veil” look of the water. The rocks you’re walking past tell an old story: sediments from an ancient saltwater sea compacted into shale and sandstone, later sculpted by glaciers and ongoing erosion. Keep an eye out for ripple marks in the sandstone and blocks that have calved off the caprock.

Best Time to Hike

Spring through fall is prime. Trails can be muddy after rain, and the boardwalk and steps near the falls get slick when wet or snowy. The falls area is one of the park’s busiest spots—starting from the Stanford Trailhead helps you dodge the crunch at the main falls lot. Go early or on weekdays for a calmer experience.

Logistics

Trailhead parking is at the end of Stanford Road past Stanford House (Peninsula, OH 44264). The lot offers about 55 standard spaces, 7 horse-trailer spaces, 5 hitching posts, seasonal vault/composting toilets, and an info kiosk. Dogs are allowed on leash. The Stanford Trail and the full gorge loop are not wheelchair accessible; from the falls lot, only the first overlook on the boardwalk is accessible.

Safety & Tips

Sections are steep and can be muddy; sturdy footwear (and poles if you like) pays off. If you opt for the loop, there is no bridge across Brandywine Creek—crossing can be hazardous when rocks are slick or currents are strong. When in doubt, stick to the out-and-back. Stay on marked trails and boardwalks, and expect crowds near the overlooks.

Pros

  • Avoids the Brandywine Falls parking crunch by starting at Stanford Road.
  • Caprock-over-shale geology is front and center along the gorge.

Cons

  • Steep, often muddy bursts and many steps near the falls; not accessible.
  • No bridge on the gorge loop—stream crossing can be hazardous.

Caution

Expect steep, muddy sections and slick boardwalk/steps when wet or snowy. There is no bridge across Brandywine Creek on the gorge loop—do not attempt a crossing when water is high or rocks are slippery.
