Pros & cons
PROS
- Iconic canyon view reached in minutes
- Easy add-on to longer rim routes
CONS
- Often crowded around midday
- So short it barely feels like a hike
Large lot at the end of Dead Horse Point Rd; trail starts beside the shelter.
Uneven slickrock and sheer cliffs; wear grippy shoes and mind the heat.
What to Expect
This is more of a scenic stroll than a hike: roughly **200 ft one-way (0.04 mi)** from the main parking lot to the fenced overlook on the very tip of the mesa. The path rolls over uneven slickrock with almost no elevation change, but sturdy shoes are still smart—the sandstone is abrasive and can be slippery when dusty or wet.
Scenery & Payoff
In less than five minutes you’re standing 2,000 ft above the Colorado River, soaking up a widescreen view of looping river canyons, distant buttes, and the endless red desert sprawl that makes this park famous. It’s the exact same vista West Rim Trail hikers earn after miles of walking, only here you get it for almost no effort.
When & Why to Go
If you’ve only got a few minutes in the park, **this is the must-do stop**. Sunrise and late-day light paint the canyons and make photography easier before crowds swell. Pair it with the longer West Rim or East Rim systems if you crave mileage; otherwise, this spur alone scratches the itch.
Know Before You Go
- Surface is natural slickrock—not ADA-paved—so wheelchairs and strollers may struggle.
- Summer afternoons roast; there’s virtually no shade beyond a small shelter. Bring water even for this micro-walk.
- Stay behind railings—vertical drops start immediately beyond the fence.
