Basin Overlook

Overview

Basin Overlook is a scenic pull-off from the park’s rim trail network that drops about 100 feet below the mesa to a natural shelf. That slight change in elevation gives you a fresh, more intimate angle on the canyons compared to the busy main point.

What You'll See

Expect wide-open views across Shafer Basin—layered cliffs, red rock walls, and the kind of airy drop-offs that define this landscape. On clear days the La Sal Mountains pop on the horizon, and you can spot formations like Chimney Rock with distant glimpses toward Canyonlands.

Getting There

Reach it via the East Rim Trail, commonly started from the Visitor Center area or linked as part of a longer rim hike. A short side path leads down to the overlook’s lower shelf. There’s no road access, no pullout, and no dedicated parking right at the overlook.

Trail Notes

The approach includes uneven slickrock and a modest descent; sturdy footwear helps. There’s little shade and the area is exposed to sun and wind—pack water, sun protection, and a layer. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trails.

Wildlife & Desert Life

Along the rim you may encounter mule deer, jackrabbits, ground squirrels, and lizards, plus ravens and red‑tailed hawks riding the thermals. Juniper, pinyon, and seasonal wildflowers dot the route.

Amenities

There are no amenities at Basin Overlook—no restrooms, water, or picnic tables. Services are back at the Visitor Center or campgrounds.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning and late afternoon bring softer light and cooler temps, and this spot stays calmer than the main point. Midday can be harsh for photos and hot on the exposed rock.

Tips

• Bring a camera—golden hour here is fantastic.
• Carry plenty of water and sun protection; shade is minimal.
• Watch your footing on the slickrock descent.
• Binoculars make spotting distant features and raptors more rewarding.
