Harlech Beach and Dunes

Overview

About Harlech Beach

Why stop

  • Huge sandy shoreline with room to find a quiet stretch
  • Castle and mountain views make ordinary beach walks memorable

Heads up

  • The short approach crosses soft, uneven dune sand
  • Exposed shore and changing tides demand sensible conditions
Harlech is a broad, open sweep of pale sand backed by rolling grassy dunes. The beach looks out across Cardigan Bay, while Harlech Castle and the mountains of Eryri give the inland side a memorable backdrop. Its real pleasure is scale: even on a bright summer day, the shoreline usually gives walkers plenty of room to spread out.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to visit

Go early on a summer weekend or choose a weekday if you want the quietest feel. Late afternoon gives the dunes warmer light and is especially good for photographs looking back toward the castle and mountains; evening can bring beautiful long shadows across the sand. Low tide exposes a huge stretch of firm wet sand, but the waterline moves a long way and conditions change quickly, so check the tide before walking far or swimming.

Walking and access

The main approach is from the car park near the railway line, followed by a roughly 400-metre path through the dunes. The walk is short, but the final section can be sandy and uneven. Once you reach the shore, the beach is broad and mostly flat, making it excellent for a long walk, a quiet sit, or a family game. The dunes are part of the protected Morfa Harlech landscape, so stay on established paths and avoid trampling the grass and wildflowers.

More about Harlech Beach

PracticalitiesThere is parking and a public toilet by the main access.

There is parking and a public toilet by the main access. Bring water, a windproof layer, sun protection, and something to sit on: the walk from the car park is easy, but the beach itself is exposed and services are not on the sand. Swimming is popular, yet this is an open beach without dependable lifeguard cover. Treat the gentle slope as no guarantee of safe conditions, supervise children closely, and keep clear of the railway. Dogs are restricted from part of the beach from 1 April to 30 September; follow the signs at the access and use the permitted area.
