Deep in the Iris Burn valley on the Kepler Track, Iris Burn Hut is the mid-walk refuge everyone looks forward to. It’s a proper Great Walk hut: big, social, and set in a tussock clearing ringed by Fiordland forest and mountains. Expect camaraderie, a resident DOC ranger in season, and that sweet relief of a roof after a full day on the trail.

Best time to visit

Great Walks season (late Oct–late Apr) is the sweet spot for full facilities, ranger presence, and generally busier but smoother logistics.
Off-season is quieter and cheaper-feeling, but you’ll trade comforts for pit toilets, no gas, and more self-reliance.
Aim to arrive mid-afternoon to snag your preferred bunk and enjoy the waterfall side trip before evening.

Facilities and how it works

There are 50 bunks in communal rooms, a big kitchen/dining area with tables and seating, and lighting powered by solar. During the Great Walks season (late October to late April), you’ll have mattresses, gas for cooking, cold running water, flush toilets, heating, and a DOC ranger on site. There are no showers, and you need to bring your own pots and utensils. Outside the season it’s true backcountry: no gas, no indoor running water, pit toilets, and bunks become first-come, first-served.
