From shore you may spot seals or even dolphins cruising by, and birdlife like kea and tui is possible. For better odds of marine sightings (and close-up waterfall action), hop on a cruise or kayak—operators regularly swing past the base of the cliffs.

Milford Sound’s vertical drama is glacial handiwork: hard granite and metamorphic rock sculpted into near-vertical faces. The English name “Mitre Peak” comes from its resemblance to a bishop’s mitre; its Māori name is Rahotu. The wider area forms part of the Te Wāhipounamu UNESCO World Heritage site.

• Go early or late for softer light, fewer people, and the best reflections.
• Rain is common; overcast or misty conditions add atmosphere and kick the waterfalls into high gear—don’t be deterred.
• The foreshore can get wet with changing tides—mind your footing and gear.
• Sandflies are no joke here: long sleeves and repellent help a lot.
• A wide-angle lens is perfect for the peak and surrounding walls; binoculars help with wildlife.
