Milford Sound’s vertical drama is glacial handiwork: hard granite and metamorphic rock sculpted into near-vertical faces. The English name “Mitre Peak” comes from its resemblance to a bishop’s mitre; its Māori name is Rahotu. The wider area forms part of the Te Wāhipounamu UNESCO World Heritage site.
