Lake Manapouri

• Take the lake crossing en route to Doubtful Sound—this is the standard way to start that legendary fiord trip.
• Paddle coves and explore by kayak or join a guided boat tour for easy island and waterfall vistas.
• Walk quiet lakeshore tracks to sandy coves and native bush; the Kepler Track touches the lake, with Moturau Hut sitting right on the waterfront.
• Unwind on beaches and bays, then stay for sunset—western shores often serve up glowing mountain silhouettes.

Expect native birds around the bushy shorelines (tui, bellbirds, and occasionally kaka). Out on Doubtful Sound trips launched from the lake, keep an eye out for seals, penguins, and dolphins.

• Early Māori called the lake Roto-au—“the rainy lake”—a nod to Fiordland’s famously wet climate (about seven metres of rain annually).
• The modern “Save Manapouri” movement in the 1960s–70s turned the lake into a national symbol of conservation, protecting its natural levels from hydro proposals.
• Glaciers sculpted the lake’s deep basins and surrounding peaks, leaving today’s dramatic amphitheater of water and rock.

• Within the park on the lakeshore, South Arm Campsite is a basic DOC site: expect non-flush toilets and untreated water; access is by boat or via Borland Road.
• Didymo is present along lake margins—check, clean, and dry all gear and watercraft before moving between waterways.
• The small township of Manapouri sits on the eastern shore; it’s quieter than Te Anau and has fewer services, so plan ahead.

• It’s among New Zealand’s deepest lakes (around 440–444 m), carved by Ice Age glaciers.
• The western arm hides the Southern Hemisphere’s largest underground power station, an unexpected bit of engineering in a wild corner of the world.
