Luxmore Hut

Overview

Perched just above the bushline around 1050–1085 m on the Kepler Track, Luxmore Hut is the classic first-night stop: a big, modern Great Walk hut with a front‑row seat to Lake Te Anau and a skyline of Fiordland peaks. The climb delivers you from mossy beech forest to open tussock, and the hut greets you with decks made for lingering.

Why it’s worth your effort

Those views are the headline—wide, east-facing panoramas that glow at sunrise. The hut is unusually roomy for an alpine spot, so you actually get space to cook, lounge, and watch the light swing across the basin. And there’s a bonus: Luxmore Cave is just a short wander away for a quick taste of Fiordland’s limestone underworld.

Getting there

Reach it on foot via the Kepler Track from the Control Gates near Te Anau. Most hikers take about 4–6 hours, depending on pace and breaks. Expect a steady climb through beech forest before breaking onto the tussock tops where the hut sits.

Facilities and what to expect

• 54 bunks with mattresses in shared bunkrooms (earplugs are smart)
• Large common/dining area with plenty of bench space and tables; gas cookers provided in Great Walk season
• Water from rain tanks—treat or boil before drinking
• Toilets: flush during Great Walk season; pit/vault style outside the season
• Hut rangers are present in season and often give evening talks
• No food sales, no store, no Wi‑Fi, and no road access—carry everything you need

Luxmore Cave (easy side trip)

A 10-minute walk from the hut leads to limestone passages with stalactites and stalagmites. Bring a torch/headlamp and mind your footing; explore only as conditions and your comfort allow.

Wildlife

Kea frequently patrol the decks—brilliant, curious alpine parrots that will happily investigate unattended gear. On the climb you’re likely to hear or spot bellbirds, tomtits, grey warblers, and fantails in the forest.

Best time to visit

Great Walk season (late October to late April) is the sweet spot for amenities (gas, flush toilets, rangers) and typically safer conditions. For photography, sunrise from the decks is hard to beat on a clear morning.

Need-to-know

This hut is popular—bookings are required and it can feel busy. Weather swings fast above the bushline; pack warm layers, a shell, hat and gloves, even in summer. Secure your gear from kea, and treat the hut water before drinking.
