What to expect
This is a short, easy forest wander that ends at a lakeside viewpoint over Lake Monowai. You’ll walk under mature beech trees draped in moss and lichen, with fungi thriving in the damp Fiordland air. It’s tranquil, family-friendly, and a nice leg-stretcher if you’re camped nearby or passing through the Borland–Lake Monowai area. The lookout has picnic tables and bench seats—bring a thermos and make a moment of it.
Distance and pace
Plan on about 3 km (1.9 miles) total, out-and-back, and roughly an hour at an unhurried pace, including time at the viewpoint. The track is well-formed, mostly flat, and easy underfoot, though Fiordland’s rainfall means it can be damp or muddy after weather.
Route and logistics
Start from the Lake Monowai carpark within the Monowai Campsite at the end of Lake Monowai Road. The track follows the forest edge and finishes at the lookout on the lakeshore; return the same way. There are no toilets on the short track itself—use the facilities at the campsite. Pets aren’t allowed (Fiordland National Park rules). Pack out all rubbish.
Scenery and wildlife
This is classic Fiordland beech forest—lush greens, mossy trunks, and fallen logs speckled with fungi. Birdlife is a highlight in the wider Lake Monowai–Borland area (over 45 species recorded), so bring binoculars and listen for activity in the canopy as you walk. Views at the end take in Lake Monowai and its surrounding hills—quiet, moody, and very Fiordland.

Yes, if you want an easy, peaceful taste of Fiordland without committing to a big mission—especially convenient from the campground. If you’re chasing bigger views or more challenge, pair this with nearby options like the Borland Nature Walk or other tracks off Borland Road.

Year-round. Expect changeable weather at any time—carry a rain layer. Spring and summer feel especially lush, while autumn brings color to the forest. Mornings or late afternoons often bring calm lake surfaces for reflections and softer light at the lookout.
