Plan on about 3 km (1.9 miles) total, out-and-back, and roughly an hour at an unhurried pace, including time at the viewpoint. The track is well-formed, mostly flat, and easy underfoot, though Fiordland’s rainfall means it can be damp or muddy after weather.
Route and logistics
Start from the Lake Monowai carpark within the Monowai Campsite at the end of Lake Monowai Road. The track follows the forest edge and finishes at the lookout on the lakeshore; return the same way. There are no toilets on the short track itself—use the facilities at the campsite. Pets aren’t allowed (Fiordland National Park rules). Pack out all rubbish.
Scenery and wildlife
This is classic Fiordland beech forest—lush greens, mossy trunks, and fallen logs speckled with fungi. Birdlife is a highlight in the wider Lake Monowai–Borland area (over 45 species recorded), so bring binoculars and listen for activity in the canopy as you walk. Views at the end take in Lake Monowai and its surrounding hills—quiet, moody, and very Fiordland.
