Pros & cons
PROS
- Fast payoff viewpoint with a bench for a quick sit or snack
- Usually quiet compared to bigger-name Fiordland walks
CONS
- Can be slick and rooty after rain despite being short
- Sandflies can be intense at the lake and lookout
Park at the Monowai Campsite/carpark at the end of Lake Monowai Road; the loop starts nearby.
Expect slippery roots after rain, variable Fiordland weather, and persistent sandflies—carry repellent and a rain layer.
What to expect
A quick, low-commitment wander that pays off fast. This is a short loop through lush Fiordland beech and podocarp forest to a small lookout clearing above Lake Monowai. Figure on roughly 0.75 miles/1.2 km total for the loop and about 15–30 minutes, depending on photo time at the top. The path is clear and well marked, with a steady but modest climb.
Scenery
It’s classic Fiordland: moss-draped beech, rimu and kāmahi, with a ferny understory and birdsong for company. The lookout offers a sweeping view over the northern reaches of Lake Monowai and surrounding hills. There’s a bench at the top—nice for a breather or quick picnic.
Trail notes
Underfoot can be rooty and slick after rain, so wear decent shoes. Expect a few short steeper bits and occasional steps, but most walkers with basic fitness will be fine. Sandflies love the calm lake air—bring repellent.
Worth it?
Yes—especially if you’re camping at Monowai or want a leg-stretcher with a real view. If you’re hunting a big, committing tramp, this isn’t it; consider longer tracks from the same area. But as an easy, quiet Fiordland sampler, it’s underrated.
Best time to hike
Spring through autumn brings friendlier weather and longer light. Clear early mornings or late afternoons deliver the best photography. In winter the track remains accessible, but expect colder, wetter conditions and potentially muddier footing.
Getting there
