North Kinsman Mountain

Overview

North Kinsman (4,293 ft) anchors the west wall of the Notch and is a classic White Mountains workout: steep, rocky, and rewarding. The true summit is wooded, but short spurs and ledges just below open to big views across to Mount Lafayette and Mount Lincoln. Many hikers tag South Kinsman, too, for its broader, open summit.

Best Routes

• West approach (Mount Kinsman Trail > Kinsman Ridge): About 8.2 miles round trip with ~3,250 feet of gain, usually 6–6.5 hours. It’s a steady climb with a final 0.4 mile of rough ledges to the outlooks. Don’t miss the quick spur to Bald Peak for a fine preview and the short detour to Kinsman Flume lower down.
• East approach (Lafayette Place > Lonesome Lake > Fishin’ Jimmy > Kinsman Ridge): Popular and scenic—1.2 miles to Lonesome Lake, 2.0 miles up Fishin’ Jimmy to Kinsman Junction, then 0.6 miles south to North Kinsman. Expect wet, slabby sections that can feel scrambly.
• Waterfall-rich alternative (The Basin > Basin-Cascade > Cascade Brook > Kinsman Pond): A longer, quieter line through mossy forest and cascades to Kinsman Pond, then up to the ridge.
• Add-on: South Kinsman is 0.9 mile south from North Kinsman with more expansive views; continue ~0.1 mile past its summit for even better open ledges.

What You’ll See

North Kinsman’s outlooks frame Kinsman Pond below and the Franconia Ridge skyline—Lafayette and Lincoln steal the show. The approach via Lonesome Lake gives you a bonus alpine pond scene and hut vibes on the way.

Season & Conditions

• Prime hiking runs June–October; late September often brings peak foliage and crisp views.
• Summer here is typically less crowded than Franconia Ridge, but weekends are still busy.
• Trails are steep and slippery after rain or during spring melt; the slabby bits on Fishin’ Jimmy are especially slick when wet.
• Winter is serious: expect icy slabs and subzero wind chills; bring traction and full winter kit, and verify higher-summit forecasts before committing. West-side parking off NH 116 may not be plowed.

Logistics & Amenities

• Parking: Start from Lafayette Place in the Notch (fills early—aim for about 7:00 AM on weekends) or the dirt lot off NH 116 for the Mount Kinsman Trail.
• Water & rest stops: AMC’s Lonesome Lake Hut offers a place to rest, bathrooms, and seasonal snacks; treat all natural water. Kinsman Pond Campsite near the ridge is a convenient staging point (caretaker/fee in season).
• Fees: Some lots in the surrounding national forest may require a day-use pass—check current details before you go.
• Dogs: Leashed dogs are allowed on trails; note that pets are not permitted in Lafayette Place Campground except in designated dog-walk areas near the Tramway and Flume parking lots.

Best Time to Visit

• Weekdays and early starts win—trailheads are far quieter before 8 AM, especially during foliage season.
• For a fuller day and better light on the Franconia Ridge views, ascend via Lonesome Lake in the morning and decide at North Kinsman whether to continue to South Kinsman for the big panoramas.
• On peak weekends, consider the park’s seasonal hiker shuttle as a backup for parking.
