Kinsman Falls

Overview

Kinsman Falls is a ~20‑foot waterfall on Cascade Brook, tucked just upstream from The Basin. It’s a compact, dramatic drop into a calm pool—easy to reach yet it still feels like a little pocket of wilderness. Historically it has worn a few names (you may see “Tunnel Falls” in older references), but the experience is the same: rushing water, polished stone, and cool air rising from the gorge.

Geology in a nutshell

This whole corridor—The Basin, the sculpted ledges, and the falls—was carved by glacial melt about 15,000 years ago. The brook continues to sand and polish the granite, creating smooth slabs and potholes you’ll walk past on the way in.

Getting there

Park at The Basin pull‑offs along I‑93 and follow signs for the Basin–Cascades Trail. From The Basin, it’s roughly 0.5 miles to Kinsman Falls (about 1.2 miles round‑trip in total) with steady but modest elevation gain. Wayfinding is straightforward and the route parallels the brook the whole way.

Trail and terrain

Expect classic White Mountains footing: roots, rocks, and occasional mud. Granite near the water is slick—treat it like ice. After heavy rain, small crossings above and below the falls can turn from easy steps to “pick your line carefully.” Families tackle this all the time, but you’ll want decent footwear and patience.

What you’ll see

The approach is half the fun: continuous cascades, little chutes, and natural wading pools when flows are safe. At the falls, multiple perches offer good angles, and a short, rough spur drops to the pool for closer views—take it slow on the ledges.

Wildlife

You’ll hear songbirds over the roar and may spot chipmunks or red squirrels along the trail. Cascade Brook has a history of holding small trout—keep an eye out in the quieter eddies.

Best time to visit

Late spring through fall is prime. Snow and ice can linger into May, and early summer can bring black flies—spray helps. The Basin is a popular roadside stop, so for a quieter feel and prettier light, aim for morning or late afternoon. Facilities in the notch can be limited outside the main season, so plan accordingly.

Make it a bigger day

If you’re feeling strong, continue upstream toward the Appalachian Trail and Lonesome Lake for boardwalk views and a classic loop; there’s an AMC hut up there that offers simple snacks in season—bring a little cash.
