The West Rim Trail is the western stretch of the South Rim’s Rim Trail, running from Grand Canyon Village to Hermits Rest with nonstop canyon panoramas. It’s a mellow, rim-hugging walk that strings together classic overlooks—Trailview, Maricopa, Powell, and Hopi among them—plus big windows into the inner gorge and the Colorado River below. Expect a mix of paved paths near the Village and well-packed dirt between viewpoints, benches at overlooks, and constant photo stops.

Route and distance

Hike it point-to-point from Grand Canyon Village to Hermits Rest for about 8.2 miles one way (plan roughly 3 hours at a steady, unhurried pace). Elevation change is minimal—gentle undulations rather than any serious climbing—so the effort is more about mileage and sun exposure than steepness. The park’s shuttle along Hermit Road makes it easy to shorten the walk or ride back to your start.

What you’ll see

This is a greatest-hits reel of South Rim scenery. Early on, you’ll pass Trailview Overlook, then sweep out to Maricopa, Powell, and Hopi Points—each a different angle on the inner canyon’s buttes and chasms. Near the Village, look for bronze Trail of Time medallions embedded in the path, part of a geoscience exhibit that helps you connect the views with the canyon’s deep time story.

Logistics and amenities

Water and services are available in the Grand Canyon Village area and again at Hermits Rest; there’s no potable water in between, so carry what you need. Portions near the Village and major viewpoints are paved and more accessible, while stretches farther west are unpaved. Leashed dogs are allowed on this rim trail, which is rare in the park—just plan for paw safety and heat. Hermits Rest, a historic stone building at the western terminus, offers amenities and a worthy endpoint.

Best time to hike

Open year-round, with spring and fall delivering the most comfortable temps and clear skies. Summer brings intense sun and bigger crowds—start early or aim for late-day light. In winter, many sections remain walkable, but shaded spots can be icy; traction and caution help. Photography is excellent throughout the day, but sunrise and sunset at the points can be spectacular.

Tips

Use the shuttle to custom-fit your distance and focus on your favorite viewpoints. If you want a shorter sampler, concentrate on the Maricopa–Powell–Hopi stretch for a dense cluster of iconic views. Pack sun protection, snacks, and plenty of water—this trail is exposed and amenities are only at the ends.

Pros

  • Hermits Rest makes a fitting finish with historic character and services
  • Trail of Time interpretive features near the Village add geology context
  • Easy shuttle access lets you tailor distance or make it a one-way

Cons

  • No potable water between Grand Canyon Village and Hermits Rest
  • Crowded around popular overlooks, especially in peak seasons
  • Unpaved stretches reduce accessibility west of the Village

Parking

Start from the Grand Canyon Village area; use the Hermit Road (Red Route) shuttle to begin or return from any viewpoint, including Hermits Rest.

Caution

Highly exposed with little shade—summer heat and sun are intense. No water along the route between endpoints. Watch for icy patches in winter and stay well back from cliff edges. Pets must be leashed and need water.
